Story telling on an iPad

Storytelling has been around as long as we have been. The art has evolved along the way as different forms of media and vehicles to consume content were invented. Great story tellers have entertained generations – sitting around fireplaces, through their writing, visuals and through movies.

The iPad and the iPhone have allowed story telling to evolve to a new level by allowing the story telling to become interactive. I have been watching this space for a while and then decided to take the plunge a few months ago. I started work on a project with the objective of building the best story telling app ever on the iOS platform.

As a result of working weekends and nights for a few months, I now have a awesome iPad and iPhone application (Live on the app store) that takes the art of story telling up a level. (maybe not the best ever, but I have not seen any better yet!)

The app is called KidsLikeThat (for the iPhone) and KidsLikeThat HD (for the iPad) – both the apps have four five stories that are ready to download. These are amazing stories about the adventures of a naughty little three year old girl. (Find out more details here and watch this video too!)

I have enjoyed building this thoroughly and this has helped me combine 2 things and I love doing – (1) Telling stories (Apart from telling stories to grownups at work, I have literally told thousands of stories to my kids and they have been my most enjoyable moments) and (2) experimenting with social and new media platforms (After having built dozens of apps for clients at work, I finally have a couple of my own too!)

I love the end result. Please download it and enjoy. The basic app is free (including the ability to record your own stories). Of the five books, four are priced at 99 cents and and one (my favourite) is free! I’ve got some fantastic feedback and reviews on the iTunes store. Here are three of my favourite features that you won’t find anywhere else (these are currently available only on the iPad version)

(1) Customize the app by adding your child’s picture and name. (Kids love it!)
(2) Record your own storytelling sessions and access them later. (Like, when you are having a long day at work)
(3) Record your own narration for all stories in the bookstore (optional).
