Richard Bach, author of the metaphysical classics, Jonathon Livingston Seagull and Bridge Across Forever, noticed that the Idea Fairy came to him when he was gardening, or flying in a plane. That’s when he would get his story line ideas and life solutions.
Call it what you want: the zone, the flow, the magical gap, the illuminating silence….there is a place in space and time where we tend to think and feel most clearly. And in that place, aha’s, creative genius, strategies, and revelations tend to flow our way.
Notice when and where the Idea Fairy likes to visit you.
Notice how solutions enter your being.
Maybe it’s when you’re talking to a particular friend or associate (interaction). When you’re cruising down the highway or walking to work (movement). Or in the bathtub or washing the dishes (water). Some people’s Idea Fairies like to show up after a good meal or great sex, first thing in the morning, or just as they’re drifting off to sleep.
The Idea Fairy can be slightly unpredictable. She won’t always show up when you’re in the zone. But she really appreciates being invited.
Management gurus and their disciples, thinkers, strategists and business process re-engineers have been busy propelling the modern world into not only coping with, but also keeping in step with the rapid changes of an ever shrinking, increasingly competitive and exhaustingly demanding global market.
I am told that a goldfish cannot remember anything beyond a 3 minute time frame. One of my favorite pastimes is to sit and watch our goldfish swim around lazily and rising up only to gobble at the food before going back to their contented existence.
Their swimming around actually reminds me of chil
There are many areas to look at in communication: a message is communicated through visual, vocal and verbal means. From that, comes the importance of body language, how we present ourselves, and so on. The visual and vocal elements are indeed very important to effective communication, but we will
The arbiter of knowledge and skills, the teacher, is a revered figure around the world. In India, the teacher is known as the guru, the wise one who can be trusted to lead the knowledge-blind and shine the light of competence and skills in the darkness of ignorance and incompetence.
Over time it ha
1. There are no rules.
Structures, how-to's, dogma, principles...all disciplines and theories should be used to support your freedom and independent thinking. Curiosity is exponentially more powerful than playing by the rules.
2. Say thank you.
Gratitude is one of the most creative and noble forc
Have you ever wondered how certain couples were able to stay together for many years? What are they doing right? What are the factors that contribute to the success of healthy, long term relationships? There are a few fundamental components that will improve your chances of having a successful relat
I stay in the coastal city of Chennai and one of my favorite pastimes is to explore the coastline that borders one side of the city.
Starting from the crowded marina and Eliot’s Beach to the less crowded and secluded ones that dot the East Coast Road (or ECR as it is called), I have always found
"Depression was, indeed, the hand of a friend trying to press me down to the ground on which it was safe to stand--the ground of my own truth, my own nature with its complex mix of limits and gifts, liabilities and assets, darkness and light." Parker Palmer
I've never been through pregnancy depress
Many a time we are swept by that overwhelming feeling to bare all. Not to be mistaken with confession which is done after ensuring that there is nothing further to lose on account of reputation. I am referring to pure tear jerker stuff. Born out of righteous indignation. Or plain stupidity. The form
One mile south of Georgia O'Keefe's beloved Ghost Ranch in New Mexico, thirteen miles down a cliff-hugging dirt road in the heart of Chama Canyon, you will find Christ In The Desert. The Benedictine Monastery is cloister to about twenty monks. I'd fantasized about retreating to the remote monastery
Best ideas come to me when I am in shower or driving. Usually when I have no paper and hopefully can remember. The idea fairy has also been known to strike when I take the time to listen rather than try and think of what I am going to say.
Great article. I realized about two months ago, that I can fairly predict that the idea fairy will come when I am jogging. I try to use this quite often and it works.
Wonderful article Danielle. The idea fairy comes to me when I am present to my experience in a friendly curious manner. One thing leads to another and it is quite the dance. It helps to leave out a little fairy food: appreciation, giggles, silliness and a sense of childlike wonder and amazement. Thank you. Nick
The idea fairy visits me after exercising. My head is clear but collected and I am energized. So important to take that me time, whatever it is, and self reflect.
When the idea fairy visits, have a pen nearby. Sometimes it is hard to remember exactly what happens when you are in the zone.
Right on Margaret, my shower is my best zone to create, to negotiate ideas, to solve problems, to write headlines. When asked for an idea, I often tell clients “time to go take a shower…” Always gets a double take. Driving and flying also work, and even just a silent time in the morning – no phones, no radio, no disruptions.
I always carry a pocket spiral notebook and pen – everywhere – and into the bathroom where I sometimes need to step out and really write down great thoughtware. Stop the car, I want to write down – this morning I realized I need a software that records a conversation to myself – like a SKYPE call to myself – show ‘n tell style from my laptop.
Any help there? Wanna go take a shower Danielle? Great topic, thanks, rk
I liked this article. I think, idea generation requires stillness of mind as well as agitation– stillness that removes the noises *^ and distracting frequencies and agitation that generates the forward drive to propel your mind in newer directions. These ’special moments’ whether running or driving or taking a shower may help achieve exactly these conditions and can be cultivated by individuals. ‘Special moments’ may also happen as a result of external stimuli– such as a tight deadline.
I remember one instance, taking a break during work hours for a short run– off with tie et al, into my track suit and back to tie and work in an hour– to sort a particularly knotty issue. I recommend this (or whatever it is that works for you).
*^ The ‘noise’ that blocks you may be physical or even hormonal.
