“The things you are fired for are often the things that in later life you will be celebrated and given life time achievement awards for!” Francis Ford Coppola was canned for writing an “odd” and awkward script for the now legendary film Patton. The film was shelved, took years to make, and then went on to win an Oscar for best screenplay.

Meanwhile, Coppola was working on The Godfather and was also on the verge of being canned from that film. He figures the glory from the Oscar saved his butt from being fired from The Godfather…which as we all know, went down in movie making history.

If I hadn’t been rejected from art school, I’d never have written my first book. If I’d gotten that gig with the big publishing house, I wouldn’t have met The Dalai Lama. If I’d stayed in my last company, I wouldn’t be writing the White Hot Truth.

What’s “odd” is often revolutionary (change happens at the edges….beware the majority). Artistry rarely compromises, it just looks for a new place to express itself. “Good” will never, ever, ever be as deeply fine as giving it your all come hell or high water.

Thank God for failure. What failures are you grateful for?

I call myself an eternal optimist. People, who know me, or even those who don’t, see me as the person with an “ever ready” smile. I think it is natural but the other day when I sat reflecting, my thoughts automatically led me to thinking about myself.

I started thinking about some comments people had made when I was at work as an invigilator. There was this guy who said, “You are the only person smiling around here. Keep it up.” And he even thanked me for it. I must say that I was taken by surprise. In fact, this must have been at least the 5th time, when I have been paid this compliment and it has always taken me by surprise. But, it does reinforce my faith in me and my decision to be an optimist, especially during the times when I don’t feel great or full of positive energy.

Do I smile that much? I went back to thinking about myself over the years—was I like this always? Or, is it a recent trait? I tried to dig deep in my memory as far as possible. I don’t remember all of my childhood but I can remember as far back as 37 years ago when I was about 5 years old. I don’t think I was the always-smiling individual that I am now. And of course, I remember only a few incidents – not all. In fact, what I remember is that I was always one for whom the world was a strange place and I felt like an alien. I was always wondering about what was going on around me; wondering about how little I knew while others knew so much; how the others could be at peace and enjoy everything while I was the one who would just stare and wonder.

Gradually, I did come to terms with myself but wondered if my friends and siblings had the same experience. Anyhow, I guess I must have started consciously working on myself in grade 3 or 4. I used to observe my Mom a lot which is usual in everyone’s life. I would see her smiling and talking with everybody. At times she would be absolutely tired and ready to fall but her smile would always spring up when a guest arrived unannounced (must say that that was the trend those days).

I must tell you however, that I was the usual grumpy adolescent later on but certainly less grumpier than most of my peers. I was introspective even then and taught myself to smile even when I was going through the most difficult times of my life.

I think that I have probably been trying to cultivate a smile and a positive countenance ever since then. Smiling and optimism go hand in hand, don’t they? There are times though when I am not cheerful and I can be grumpy and unhappy like anyone else. But it takes a lot to make me cry. I have to be very deeply hurt and disappointed to shed tears.

So, what is it that has made me into an eternal optimist? To sum it up: an interest in being a more pleasant person, working on myself, holding on to a childlike innocence and allowing life to happen around me without too much judgment. These are the traits which have helped me to maintain the sunny disposition that is my trademark.

There are times in life when for no particular reason, you’re feeling lower than a snake’s belly you know, a little on the weepy side, kind of listless, thinking a big chunk of chocolate would lift your spirits right up. Sometimes, without much effort, the weather changes, the mood passes and all’s right with the world. But if you’re stuck in Dumpsville, then what? Nobody wants to be there; it’s a dark, lonely place but then we wait for someone to come and take us out of there and make us happy again.

Happiness is the elusive, but much desired state of mind which visits us at times but never stays for long. One cannot be always happy…. contented perhaps, but never always happy. So how does one become happy? How do we bring happiness to us rather then waiting it to happen to us?

Happiness begins just by the intention to be happy; we cannot control our circumstances or the events happening to us but we can choose how to react to them.

Unfortunately in today’s chaotic world, most of us live life on autopilot and we rush through our garden of life without taking time to smell the roses. And yet, there are so many small things which we can easily incorporate into our life which will bring a bounce in our step and a smile on our lips….interested?

I am not going to give you a sure shot method or formula to be happy. Neither am I going to tell you to exercise or do yoga or bring any earth shattering change in your life. All I will do is to ask you to tweak the life you are already living — point you towards something you already know but somewhere down the line forgot you knew it.

It doesn’t take much to be happy and I am speaking from experience. You don’t have to have the world to make you happy. Just ONE small thing at a time can bring a wave of joy with ripples that can be felt for a long time. What is that one thing? It can be anything. Take your pick from list provided below and make your own formula to be happy.

1) We all need JUST ONE PLACE, one corner in this world where we can be ourselves — it can be your parents’ house where you can be child again or a friend’s house or a small cosy corner in your own house where you can have your ME time and reflect on life. A place where you can make goals, repair yourself or do nothing and live life without rules.

2) We also need JUST ONE PERSON with whom we can share our dreams, aspirations, fears and failures. Someone who can understand our words and also our silences.

3) We SHOULD BLOOM ONCE and reach a peak by accomplishing something extraordinary. We should taste success once so that it inspires us to travel that path one more time.

4) We should experience real LOVE AT LEAST ONCE IN LIFE. You should love someone more than you ever thought yourself capable of doing. Allow yourself to fall so hopelessly in love that you feel giddy….it’s an amazing feeling.

5) We should own ONE PIECE OF CLOTHING or accessory that makes us feel gorgeous, like million bucks, and instantly transforms a worm into a butterfly.

6) We should HAVE ONE GOAL OR MANTRA in life that motivates us and chanting it should fill us with energy and get us back on the road to recovery. It can be spiritually-rooted or a material goal you want to achieve in life.

7) We should COMMIT ONE SIN or do something naughty in life which gives us a thrill and reminds us how young and carefree we were at one time.

We should LOVE ONE GOOD THING IN OURSELVES and work towards preserving that quality. When you acknowledge your virtues mentally, it means you are also aware of ‘negative’ qualities in you and just being aware of your complete self makes you happy.

9) We should own ONE BOX OF OLD MEMORIES. It can be an old album/letters/journal or anything that keeps you in touch with your past, which charts your journey to present.

10) We should have ONE DESIRE to follow passionately. It could be material or non material but life should be full of desires because they keep us alive and thriving.

11) We should BREAK ONE BARRIER IN LIFE if not more. Overcoming your limitation gives you hope and courage and you learn to expand and grow in life.

12) We should NURTURE ONE THING in life. It can be as big as mentoring someone or as small as watering a plant. Nurturing anything brings of joy to one’s life.

13) We should GIVE UP SOMETHING WE LOVE once in life. It teaches us what true giving is all about. If you don’t know how to sacrifice, you will never appreciate what you receive.

“…happiness was but the occasional episode in a general drama of pain.”
-Thomas Hardy

According to an often quoted saying, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.” But I believe that it should be, “Happiness is next to Godliness.” God has given us a beautiful gift of life and by being sad we do not do justice to Him.

Happiness is an essential part of any person’s life. A happy person enjoys life completely and truly values God’s priceless gift. He/she is like a radiant jewel in a drab world of pessimists. Those who brood over past events and future prospects not only disregard God’s gift but they do injustice to themselves as human beings with remarkable potential.

Life should be enjoyed with happiness and delight. I do not agree with Hardy’s view. I am convinced that sadness is an occasional episode and even when we are confronted with anguish there is a blessing involved because it teaches us to be aware of the real essence of life and how to appreciate happiness to a greater extent.

We are here on earth to accomplish certain goals and if we work on keeping a happy outlook we’ll accomplish those goals much faster and more efficiently.

Happiness and sorrow are like two seasons. If one season is there, the next is sure to follow. The best way to enjoy these two seasons is to have patience. Becoming overwhelmed happiness or being too distressed in sadness mars the essence of living.

Our life is very precious and in order to give and receive the very best, we must polish it with happiness. When we polish life with happiness we are able to maintain the lustre and we find that God’s blessings are reflected through this polished life.

So, remain happy. Even when sadness comes, deal with it patiently knowing that very soon the autumn of sadness will change into the spring of happiness.

A smile may be the definition of your life and yourself. Nowadays people are rushed and stressed while carrying around worry, fear and disappointment with the latest news and events. Taking the time to give a warm, heartfelt smile seems to be a luxury or just a waste of time.
Actuality, it isn’t!

A smile is a fundamental action and reaction that it is crucial to our lives, as human beings who must interact with others on a daily basis. Besides having the capacity to break down emotional and mental barriers, a smile is also an indication of a happy spirit and is a source of energy, for you and for others.

A friendly and sincere smile can win friends and influence even the most stubborn and difficult people.

The smile energy can neutralize any assumption of rudeness from others and will vaccinate you against bad feelings and negative thoughts.

Begin a smile-rich day in the morning by smiling in the mirror and seeing good things flowing around you as you go about your business. Try to keep a smile in your mind as you step out to face the world. To make this easier, remember all the good things that life has given to you over the years. Smile regularly and remember to laugh at all the quirky incidents that punctuate your life on a daily basis. You will notice that people become friendlier and more cooperative, little irritations will disappear, and many problems will be resolved quickly with little or no conflict.

Smiling doesn’t imply a careless attitude – actually it sends a message that you are psychologically balanced, approachable and capable of solving problems without allowing stress to encroach on your interaction with people.

It is a fact that if you smile often and maintain your serenity, you will improve efficiency and efficacy in solving complicated problems in the workplace and at home. You will transmit peace and confidence to your colleagues, friends, family and the world around you.

A smile is an extremely powerful tool in our day-to-day activities. Use it generously and sincerely and you will definitely see a difference in your life as each day unfolds.

I’ve been meaning to share with you my thoughts about “Affirmations” for some time now. I have written this piece over several days and I am sure you will enjoy it.

“Affirmations” are positive statements, which you repeat to yourself. They describe your aims as if they have already been accomplished. For example “I am always truthful, positive and helping others”.

When repeated on a regular basis, such statements can transform the entire landscape of our conscious and subconscious mind (our thoughts, beliefs and images).

Affirmations were made famous by the French physician Emile Coue (early 20th century), who instructed patients to repeat positive healing affirmations to themselves while in a relaxed frame of mind. Thousands of remarkable documented healings occurred as he creatively combined western medicine with the power of affirmations.

Coue’s most famous affirmation was “Everyday, in every way, I am getting better and better.”

My friend Sunit gifted me the book “Heal Your Body” by Louise Hay, which uses affirmations to cure physical diseases. I experimented with it and the results were astonishing. People tried the affirmations I suggested to them (based on the book) and reported headaches, stomach aches, sprains, running nose, and even fever disappearing within minutes.

For a long time I was skeptical about affirmations. I believed that they merely added a new layer of conditioning over our confused minds and could not have a truly long-term transformational effect. Now, based on my own experience over many months and seeing their impact on others, I consider them powerful, beneficial and reliable tools for transformation.

True, affirmations are a form of conditioning, and cannot have permanent effects. However, even eating food does not have a permanent effect. Taking a bath does not have a permanent effect. Yet we do these things everyday because we realize that it keeps the physical body in optimal condition. Similarly affirmations are nourishing, revitalizing food for the intellect. And daily silent meditation is excellent food for the heart.

Can something as simple as positive self-talk help one live a happier, more fulfilling life? Consider this, research has shown that an average person talks to himself or herself about 50,000 times a day and 80% of this self-talk is negative! Well, if consistent negative self-talk can pull one down; certainly consistent positive self-talk can prove very empowering.

Everything we say or hear, we first experience before we understand. Positive or negative words and phrases actually trigger pleasant or unpleasant feelings within us. When repeated, such phrases can change our whole emotional tone.

We are already using affirmations – everything we say is a kind of affirmation because it reinforces our self created “reality.” This is especially powerful whenever we say “I am…” something…e.g. “I am forgetful/ angry/unhappy”. We are actually reinforcing these perceptions of ourselves each time we say it. Why not say instead “I am happy/peaceful/enthusiastic.”

We live in a conditioned realm and everything we experience here is interdependent. So perhaps the real question is not whether affirmations are conditioning or un-conditioning us, but rather whether we are conscious about what we are affirming anyway? Is it beneficial or not? The bottom line is, “How do I feel when I say or think like that?”

A careful look at any religion or spiritual tradition will reveal how they all use affirmations in one form or another to modify harmful beliefs and reinforce skillful ones. It may be in the form of a prayer, an oft repeated teaching, a catch phrase, reciting sacred scriptures and associated vocabulary, group chanting or even specific ways of greeting one another…these are all actually affirmations!

I wish to share an amazing story about the power of affirmations.

The following story describes one such incident – how one man discovered the power of his mind in creating coincidences. He went on to use this ability to become so successful that his work is almost a household name in America.

For the purpose of this story, let’s call this man Scott. His real name will not be revealed until the end to make this story more intriguing. This story was told in a book Scott wrote in 1998.

In the early 1980s, Scott had heard of a process called affirmations from a friend. The process he learnt was simple.

Visualize what you want and write it down fifteen times in a row, once a day, until you obtain it.

Scott was told that the process did not require any faith or positive thinking for it to work. Even more interesting was the suggestion that the technique would influence the environment directly and not just make you more focused on your goals. In other words, it would spawn amazing coincidences to move you towards your goals. The coincidences could be things that were seemingly unconnected to you and beyond your control.

Scott was very left-brained and logical in his thinking. He had his doubts about the process but figured that there was no harm in trying.

“Within a few weeks, coincidences started to happen to me.” wrote Scott.

“Amazing coincidences, strings of them. I won’t mention the specific goal I was working on, as it was a private matter, but within a few months the goal was accomplished exactly as I had written it.”

But Scott was not yet convinced that affirmations helped. Coincidences do happen on their own and Scott considered the test inconclusive.

So Scott picked another goal – to make some gains in the stockmarket. He wrote his affirmation down every day and waited for some inspiration. It came to him in a dream. He woke up one night with the words “Buy Chrysler” repeating in his head.

He bought shares in the inspired company during one of its most bleak periods, yet it began to rise soon after and he made some good returns on it. He repeated the experiment again and managed to pick another successful company, with stock-symbol “Ask”.

Armed with this confidence in the power of affirmations Scott decided to apply it to a more challenging goal – getting into the highly competitive Berkeley MBA program.

The problem was that he had already taken the entrance exam and only hit the seventy-seventh percentile score. He knew he needed to be above the ninetieth percentile to at least have a chance of being accepted.

Scott picked the outlandish target of ninety-four as his goal and again applied the affirmation technique.

Despite not being able to go much higher than the seventy-seventh percentile in the practice exams, Scott was surprised to learn that he did indeed hit the ninety-fourth percentile for the G.M.A.T – just as he had written in his affirmations. He graduated with his Berkeley MBA in 1986.

A few years later he tried pursuing a more serious goal: that of being a syndicated cartoonist. He knew the odds of his cartoon submission being accepted by a major newspaper were roughly 1 in 10,000.

He beat those odds and his cartoon was accepted. He was soon earning a decent living with his cartoon strip but he wanted to achieve something bigger.

He decided he wanted the most successful comic strip on the planet. Scott felt that the best measure of “most successful” would be number of books sold.

In June 1996 his book The Dilbert Principle hit the number-one spot on the hardcover nonfiction list of the New York Times. It stayed in the top three all summer. In November his second book, Dogbert’s Top Secret Management Handbook also made the bestseller list, giving Scott the number-one and number-two positions simultaneously for one week. For that brief period of time, Scott indeed had the “most successful” comic strip on the planet.

As you may have guessed, the person I’m talking about is Scott Adams, the creator of the highly successful Dilbert comic strip. Scott writes about these experiences with affirmations in his book The Dilbert Future. He does not profess to know why it works but leaves the conclusion to the reader. You can buy Scott Adams’ hilarious Dilbert books at any bookstore.

Scott Adams says, “Reporters often ask me if I am surprised at the success of the Dilbert comic strip. I definitely would be so, if not for my bizarre experience with affirmations. As it was, I expected it.”

(This story is from the website www.silvaultramindsystem.com).

Scott Adams’ experience with affirmations makes one wonder – is luck within our control? “

Reading this story that got me interested in affirmations about six months back. Since then I have had countless “coincidences” myself from using affirmations.

It’s really quite amazing how “what we think about and thank about, we bring about”! We are not merely a part of the universe, we are in fact leading edge participants in this unfolding universe.

So how can one use the power of affirmations for one’s benefit ?

Here are some guidelines based on my own experiments:

1) Affirmations should be stated in the present tense (“I am…”; “I can…”; “I choose…” etc.)

2) Affirmations should be stated in positive terms, which evoke the feelings of having already achieved the objective.

3) If possible, include at least one dynamic feeling word in your affirmations (e.g. joyfully) and one action word ending with “-ing” (e.g. deserving).

4) Keep affirmations specific, short and sweet.

5) Repeat affirmations often. Persistent repetition changes ones consistent thoughts, thereby changing one’s perception of reality.

6) Here are a few ways to repeat affirmations:

· Say aloud or silently 5 -10 times.

· Sing or hum affirmations while driving or any other idle time.

· Write down 10 – 20 times twice daily (like Scott Adams did so successfully).

7) Affirmations work best when:

· You can feel the emotional power of what you are saying in your body.

· You add visualization and can vividly see yourself living it and getting all the benefits.

· You release all desire and say them like they are already so.

· You say them soon after waking up and before sleeping; or when looking in your eyes in a mirror; or when gazing at sunrise or sunset set, after meditation, prayer, yoga, pranayama, yoga-nidra or deep relaxation etc. (These methods have a deeper effect on the subconscious mind).

Remember affirmations work without will-power. Add the words “easily” or “naturally” in your affirmations if you wish.

9) They work only when one wants the outcome 100%. If you feel hesitation about an affirmation, check for competing sub-conscious affirmations called “tail-enders.”

10) Some effective ways to deal with tail-enders are:

· Divide them into ‘aspects’ and apply EFT (visit http://www.emofree.com to learn more).

· Really feel the feelings (of resistance). Then simply release them. Allow them to flow out of your being.

11) Aim affirmations on yourself, not on changing others.

12) Occasionally say affirmations from a second and third person perspective for example “(Your name) you are…..” or “(Your name) is……” This makes it seem like someone else is telling us our good qualities and the subconscious mind has less resistance.

13) Add “….or something better” at the end of affirmations. This reduces fixation on specific outcomes. Allow the universe to surprise you with something better than you asked for!

14) Be patient! Try affirmations for at least three months before concluding that they do not work.

May you try and benefit from the power of Affirmations. May you live your highest life!

I would like you to carry an article with the title “How to live without money”. In olden days people used the barter system. If this is possible then black money from the system will vanish, hunger for amassing wealth will vanish, so many good things will happen.

Boy! What a coincidence that this question came to be asked of me. Considering that I have lived most of my life without an adequate supply of the essential moolah, I must be an expert on this subject. From the last I can remember I have had to mooch and plan for even to most of banal things; even a cup of coffee. But by golly, was it fun?

On the question of coffee or any other, essentially to mooch you have to have friends and in that I have enjoyed exceptional Grace of the Lord. Now my policy is that only fools buy them; whatever these things are. So here was my day planned out. Early morning visit to a friend and of course coffee and browse his newspaper. Then reach the office of another friend just in time for the most divine coffee again. And later if lunch could be fitted in, that would be fine but not as important as the coffee. The 4 pm coffee was the cup that required all my meticulous planning but I managed it for 25 years so I suppose I did well.

Let me relate to you how planned my life without money. I bartered my knowledge of the French language by teaching at the local YWCA and received in return a bunch of bank notes which were exchanged for a bike and camera etc. Then I wanted to go to France as some friends invited me. So I bartered the camera and bike for new bank notes that were exchanged for an airline ticket. But I am not that stupid to blow it all off. So I asked an uncle to refer me to some family friends who gave me a bunch of pearls to explore a market for them in France. I gave those pearls away to anyone who would give me in return a paper that would be legal tender for a new camera and some left over. Back home, with the ‘left over’, I paid the friends for the pearls and bought a new bike and astonished everybody with my new camera; not to say with everybody wondering how I managed a trip abroad on my kind of income.

But then I got tired of all this planning and I got married and my saga ends there. We then come to the original question of living without money. The questioner presumes: In olden days people used the barter system. If this is possible then black money from the system will vanish, hunger for amassing wealth will vanish, so many good things will happen.

How naïve! Humans are humans. Nothing good can ever come out of their propensity to grab and accumulate. Nothing comes of nothing. Barter or not, nothing good will happen; of that I am certain. There is buyer and there is a seller. How intensely the buyer wants the seller’s product will decide the exchange rate and the level of fleecing; above or below the table. So let’s be pragmatic.

Seriously speaking aren’t we missing something? What after all is money? If you are referring to gold mohurs and paper bank notes then they are just that. They are pieces of metal or paper. It could as well be sea shells. It is the value you give them that makes them what they are: an exchange rate valuation of goods, products and services. So this is the wrong way to study this subject.

The point is that we have to give to get. We may think we are enjoying things free of cost, but are we really? Cash or kind, payment is always in the pipeline. You were not under the impression that I got all my coffees, scot-free? That would be the understatement of the year. I paid by doing odd jobs; being of service in some way or the other. It just happened that I do have some subjects of interest in which I am considered good and advice and help was in demand. And I gave it freely, after all free cups of coffee, meals and what-not did not come by out of the blue.

So the long and short of it is: there is no living without money. Even my three year old daughter won’t give me a kiss without a bar of Cadbury’s chocolate. And about my wife’s payment schedule it would be best not to talk about it at all!

Money is an optical illusion. Try to get a free cup of tea from a hotelier and you will see? Either you will pay in predetermined exchange rate via bank notes or else wash the dishes in his establishment!
