There was a cowherd Mohan who took his cows to the meadows every morning and brought them back to the cowshed at the end of the day. One evening, as he was tying the cows up for the night, he found that one of them was missing her rope. He feared that she might run away, but it was too late to go and buy a new rope. He didn’t know what to do, so he went to a wise man who lived next door and sought his advice. The wise man told him to pretend to tie the cow, and make sure that the cow saw him doing it. Mohan did as the wise man suggested and pretended to tie the cow.
The next morning Mohan discovered that the cow had remained still throughout the night. He untied all the cows as usual, and they all went outside. He was about to go to the meadows when he noticed that the cow with the missing rope was still in the cowshed. She was standing on the same spot where she had been all night. He tried to coax her to join the herd, but she wouldn’t budge. Mohan was perplexed. He went back to the wise man who said, “The cow still thinks she is tied up. Go back and pretend to untie her.” Mohan did as he was told, and the cow happily left the cowshed.

a great story indeed
A good example to show and prove that the MIND is the strongest organ. What the mind conceives will surely happen.
The placebo effect is surprisingly strong.

A friend of mine once jokingly proposed firing colleagues you don’t like. Simply tell them in a convincing enough manner that they have been fired and the boss didn’t want them coming in any more and they would soon be genuinely fired for non attendance.
We joked about it but part of me thought that people are so impressionable that it could actually work.
I say cows are stupid. And so is Mohan the cowherd if he needs a wise man to tell him how what to do with his cow.
Sounds a lot the the story of the fleas in the jar. When they know there is a low ceiling, they will not jump. Even when the ceiling is removed.
The world is flat; the economy is too scary; No one is hiring, so I’ll just play Nintendo; Wah, Wah, Wah. Most of the great things we enjoy today were created by people who believed in something and refused to give up. If we choose to focus on all that is wrong, we will surely perpetuate the ills of our society. We move toward and become what we think about most. So, have beautiful thoughts and move toward them. End of story.
In business life, this story is analogous to the adage ” but we’ve always done it that way”. Some will resist change, even when you are giving them tools to free them of burdensome tasks so that they can contribute in a better way. Understanding this resistance, and how to help them develop a different mindset, is key to taking your business forward.
I agree with Paul
. The cow may be waiting in the shed for its own convenience . But stupid Mohan assumes he is the “mover and shaker” of the world and so thinks that the cow is following his act!!!
That’s how Elephants are actually tied in real life. If you ever happen to visit a circus, or sometimes they show it on TV, you’ll notice elephants with a piece of rope tied to one of their hind legs. Initially when captured they are tied to chains and when they try to get away they hurt badly and most definitely fail. So after a while they give up trying.
